Can A Fern Aid In Brain Cancer Treatment?

By Rob Sutter

Therapies and brain cancer go hand-in-hand and I do not think that anyone will be able to argue with such a point. Drugs have been put to use in the past and it seems as though many results have been had, some more worthwhile than others. Is it possible, though, that a potential addition to these studies can be derived from nature itself? The reason that I say this is because it seems as though a particular fern may be able to come into effect.

WTNH.com posted an article in regards to a fern seen in North America that would be able to prove useful for the sake of brain cancer. This plant is seen as the Christmas fern, which is especially common in the New England area. While this particular plant is common, you may wonder why organizations such as Voices against Brain Cancer would be able to help with this plant in mind. If you would like to know, there is actually a particular component that can prove useful for the sake of cancer treatment.

Dr. Sarah Crawford, as the article stated, decided to put the plant to use since it has antioxidant properties not commonly seen in complex species. The Southern Connecticut State University medical specialist had worked with other plants in the past. However, she decided that the Christmas fern was for the best, seeing as how the results were more potent here than anywhere else. What were the results of the studies done by Crawford, you may wonder? For those who don't know, said results have proven quite strong.

As it seems, Crawford put together a triple cocktail combination which was able to come into effect due to the fern extract and a chemo drug known as carmustine as well as an anti-inflammatory known as curcumin. With this set in place, it was seen that it was successful in killing off aggressive cancer cells. According to Crawford, 50 percent of the cells were killed, which is strong for a condition that has no clear treatment as of this time. Only time will tell if further progress will be made.

I have to believe this to be true, especially when it seems as though this type of cancer is one of the most serious conditions in the body. It is one that does not have a solid treatment that will be able to help everyone. Keep in mind that while there are those who have been positively impacted by the condition - even cured, as a result - it does not seem as though everyone has benefitted. I have to believe, though, that Crawford's research can open up even more doors for further therapies.

How Does The P1D1 Gene Impact Brain Cancer?

By Rob Sutter

When it comes to brain cancer in general, I'd like to think that there is a lot that can be said about the P1D1 gene. Keep in mind that its function in the body is focused on the both regulating insulin and providing mitochondrial functionality to the body. It's not like there haven't been studies focusing on it in the past but these were more along the lines of obesity and diabetes, which are vital conditions in their own right. However, how much can the P1D1 gene tie into this type of cancer?

When looking at the way that this gene has been linked to brain cancer, is it any wonder as to why this has been the case? I do not think that anyone can argue with such a point, especially when you consider just how many
therapies have been implemented certain aspects linked to other conditions. However, the idea that they can play into this one is worth the attention of various organizations, Voices against Brain Cancer included. You may be curious, though, about the importance of the P1D1 gene when regarding this type of cancer.

An article on Business Wire went into detail about how the level of messenger RNA of the gene known as P1D1 could possibly be linked to clinical outcomes. In particular, these focused on medulloblastomas and gliomas, the latter of which being more aggressive and prevalent by comparison. As it seems, P1D1 actually inhibits cell growth when it comes to these
conditions. Reports were analyzed, not only in terms of adults with these conditions but children who have had them since they were young as well.

When it comes to the therapy and its accompanying results, it probably goes without saying that higher levels of P1D1 mRNA can actually play into the survival rates of patients at large. Keep in mind that, when seen in great amounts, P1D1 can actually work well to kill tumor cells and stop the level of proliferation that would typically occur with these cells. The article mentioned how the study examined adults, seeing as how their survival rates have gone up tremendously. To say the least, this particular gene calls for attention.

Like many therapies with great potential, it will continually be put to use to see if greater results will come about. I can only hope that this will be the case, especially when it's considered that this condition is one of the most serious that can be cited. Many people have been impacted by it and the conventional method for surgery won't have the same rate of success for everyone. It's just a matter of conducting further research and the presence of the P1D1 is an idea to consider.
